That's What I Do

Solo show by Dionigi Mattia Gagliardi

December 3 - 6, 2020

Via degli Ausoni 1, 00185, Roma

This exhibition is part of the project

GRAN FINALE curated by Numero Cromatico

The show presents a selection of artworks from the series Test Verbovisivi, paintings that Dionigi Mattia Gagliardi has produced since 2015 and never exhibited before. Large and small scale paintings are hung in the exhibition space that constitute the second solo show by Gagliardi in the headquarters of Numero Cromatico. That’s What I Do: a declaration stating that all the theoretical, curatorial and editorial production, as well as the research itself, comes into the world from being an artist and producing artworks.

The series Test Verbovisivi challenges the idea that creativity is a characteristic to be attributed solely to the artist. The paintings exhibited have been realised starting from images created by third parties who were not artists at all. In these artworks, creativity, emotions and will are not the artist’s own but those of a group of subjects that were asked to complete a task, namely producing an image starting from some given words, according to a specific experimental procedure. As such, the artist selected the field of inquiry, built the experimental setting and the conditions in which the external subjects come to being. The artworks are thus a mere proof of this event - a new way of approaching painting.

This exhibition highlights some of the theoretical instances that form the basis of the aesthetic research of Numero Cromatico: producing artworks starting from a rigorous experimental process; abolishing arbitrary and dogmatic choices made by the artist; regarding creativity not as a characteristic belonging solely to the artist. This approach puts the evolution of aesthetic thinking before artistic production.
